Surgical body contouring involves the removal of surplus skin and fat, coupled with the enhancement of underlying tissue tone and shape. Various options for surgical body contouring include:

  • Facial and Neck Lift: This procedure entails the removal of surplus sagging skin, effectively lifting the face and neck to achieve a more youthful appearance.
  • Lower Body Lift: Excess skin from the abdomen, hips, buttocks, and outer thighs is excised. In some instances, a circular incision might be made around the hips.   • Buttock Lift: The upper buttock is incised, sometimes extending along the sides. Crescent-shaped sections of skin and fat are removed, and the remaining skin is sutured together.
  • Breast Lift: This procedure involves incisions around the areola and a vertical incision from the areola to the breast's underside. Additional incisions across the breast crease might be necessary. The resulting "lollipop-shaped" incisions allow for the removal of excess skin. Implants can be added to augment breast size during this process.
  • Arm Lift: An incision is made on the inner upper arm from the armpit to the elbow. Underlying muscles are tightened with sutures to create a more defined arm contour. Excess skin is excised.
  • Abdominoplasty: Abdominal muscles are tightened, reducing abdominal width and eliminating excess skin.

Non-surgical body contouring

There are various methods related to non-surgical therapy, which can be broadly categorized into two main classes: thermal therapy and non-thermal therapy. Before delving into the details of each category, let me provide a brief overview of these two classification approaches.

  • Thermal Therapy: Thermal therapy applies heat to a targeted area for healing. Methods like radiofrequency, laser, and ultrasound stimulate tissue and collagen production.
  • Non-Thermal Therapy: This includes treatments without heat, like electric or light therapy. They use energy forms such as currents, vibrations, or light wavelengths for healing, without raising tissue temperatures.

Non-thermal therapy doesn't always mean no heat. For instance, LED light therapy using a red light body contouring machine generally doesn't generate a pronounced sensation of heat, but in certain cases, individuals might perceive minor fluctuations in temperature. Ultrasound:

Ultrasonic cavitation, known as ultrasonic lipolysis, contours by removing fat beneath the skin. It employs ultrasonic radio waves to break fat cells, which are absorbed by the lymphatic system.

Ultrasound, using high-frequency sound waves, can treat tissue. Applied to the skin, it ruptures fat cells, potentially reducing body circumference. However, direct skin contact and ultrasound gel are essential to prevent burns during the procedure.

Non-Thermal:

Massage contouring:

Using a rolling or vibrating tool massaging the skin and fat, along with occasional handheld "shock wave" devices resembling small jackhammers, can temporarily enhance cellulite's appearance in treated areas. Pressure and vibration simulate lymphatic massages, potentially smoothing cellulite by eliminating excess fluid between fat cells. Low-Level Light therapy or Photobiomodulation:

In the study, a group of 18 women were selected as participants to investigate the effects of a combined therapy using three wavelengths: infrared (630nm), infrared (808nm), and blue LED (450nm), on reducing waist circumference. After undergoing 12 sessions, notable changes in their waist circumference were observed.

The size of the upper abdomen exhibited a significant reduction, transitioning from a pre-treatment measurement of 91.86 ± 11.16 to a post-treatment measurement of 87.41 ± 10.52.

The middle abdomen size displayed a substantial decrease, shifting from a pre-treatment value of 97.02 ± 8.82 to a post-treatment value of 91.97 ± 8.49.

The lower abdomen size experienced a notable reduction, moving from a pre-treatment dimension of 100.36 ± 9.45 to a post-treatment dimension of 95.80 ± 8.52.

From this study, we can deduce that the combination of these three different wavelengths resulted in effective size reduction for 100% of participants, all while avoiding any adverse effects. This strongly indicates that Low-Level Laser Therapy (LLLT) is a secure and efficient method for body contouring. It shows its ability to significantly reduce localized fat without causing any harm.

In another particular study, healthy young men and women underwent LLLT treatments and experienced noticeable improvements in their body shaping. Measurements around the waist, hips, and thighs showed a significant reduction in circumference, highlighting the positive effects of LLLT in targeting specific areas for body contouring.

Furthermore, this study showcased the potential of LLLT in reducing the appearance of cellulite. After a total of 24 treatment sessions, data demonstrated a marked decrease in subcutaneous fat located just beneath the dermis. This indicates that LLLT may contribute to a reduction in the dimpled texture commonly associated with cellulite.
